Animal House: Wall Mounts

19 Jul

I hope everyone has enjoyed the past week full of animal motifs for your home. Today is sadly the last day BUT I’m bringing you the funkiest inspiration yet.

Some people collect animal “trophies” and mount them on the wall to display their hunting skill like so:

But if you think this room is as creep-tastic as I do, then you will most definitely want to avoid this style of decorating at all costs.

However, there is an alternate way to re-create and satirize the look.

Try using fake animal wall mounts to add a creative, eclectic and FUNKY piece to your home. Most are made from pieces of cardboard or wood spliced together, but some nicer ones are made from paper mache and come in great patterns. Put one over your hearth or fireplace!

Animal House: Fur

16 Jul

To mix it up a little from just looking at animal prints, today is about another HUGE obsession of mine that belongs in the animal kingdom.

FUR.

This warm and hairy manner of decorating has been in pop culture in movies, books, and fantasies (bear skin rug by the fire, anyone?), and I am fully convinced it is a trend here to stay. In moderation, of course.

Besides adding interest and drama to your room, it is a GREAT way to add texture — a must in decorating.

Check out these digs full of the faux fur fabulosity:

Fur can give an eclectic feel to a modern room.

The wood floor would be extremely empty without a rug, and this one gives it more interest than a boring old "flat" rug.

If you're feeling really wild, go for fur bedding! Might be a little hot though...

If you're timid about the trend, try a simple blanket draped on a couch or chair.

Even West Elm is getting on in the trend!

And in keeping with eco-friendliness and my own personal beliefs, I must stress that FAUX FUR is the way to go. It can sometimes be difficult to find, but you’ll be able to rest easier knowing a small woodland creature didn’t die only to lay on your sofa. (Sorry that’s a little grotesque…just trying to make a point)

Animal House: Cow Print

14 Jul

Rattle Rattle Rattle, here come the  Cattle…

Welcome to Texas, people. Land of the free and the home of the…Cows! Did you know that the Texas Longhorn is the Texas State Large Mammal and that it is the official animal of Fort Worth, Texas a.k.a. “Cowtown”?

Holy Cow, neither did I!

But it doesn’t surprise me in the least that people here in Texas love them some cattle. Not only does the largest university here sport the Longhorn as their mascot, but the decorating motif definitely errs on the side of “ranch-chic.” I’ve seen cow print rugs, cow print stools, cow print couches, cow print pillows, and anything else you might be able to think of.

Even these cowhide lamp bases!

Hellooooo Bessie!

Animal House: Zebra Print

13 Jul

Today kicks off another themed week — Animal House.

If you can’t guess what the concept is by the title, this week I will be delving into the wonderful world of using animal-inspired decor in your home — print, fur, rugs, pillows, heads (seriously!)…EVERYTHING!

Animal prints have always been popular because they have been considered exotic, exquisite and even royal (Queen Claire sounds good, right?). They have been a symbol of status and even today, people prominently display animal “trophies” (heads) in their home. That kind of creeps me out…but to each his own I suppose.

One of the most stereotypical animal prints out there is zebra print. Perhaps one of the reasons zebra print is so popular and used is because every single zebra has a different set of stripes — like a human finger print. Even though today in modern times most animal print is fake/manufactured (thank goodness), this unique-ness is still a huge draw about zebra print.

And I am currently OBSESSED with using zebra print as a muted neutral — yes, I said neutral. I know that animal print can be extremely over done when thrown haphazardly in a room. But if you use just a touch here and there, it is an exquisite way to add a different pattern and texture to a room.

Today, peruse the images of zebra print below. Tomorrow, we continue to travel through the wild world of animals…

Whoa -- this is a little overboard for my tastes. But you've gotta applaud the creative courage.

This is definitely a neutral -- light blue zebra print.

More light-colored zebra print. Having the stools underneath this table is called "layering" because it adds another layer or level for your eyes to focus on in the room.
