Animal House: Zebra Print

13 Jul

Today kicks off another themed week — Animal House.

If you can’t guess what the concept is by the title, this week I will be delving into the wonderful world of using animal-inspired decor in your home — print, fur, rugs, pillows, heads (seriously!)…EVERYTHING!

Animal prints have always been popular because they have been considered exotic, exquisite and even royal (Queen Claire sounds good, right?). They have been a symbol of status and even today, people prominently display animal “trophies” (heads) in their home. That kind of creeps me out…but to each his own I suppose.

One of the most stereotypical animal prints out there is zebra print. Perhaps one of the reasons zebra print is so popular and used is because every single zebra has a different set of stripes — like a human finger print. Even though today in modern times most animal print is fake/manufactured (thank goodness), this unique-ness is still a huge draw about zebra print.

And I am currently OBSESSED with using zebra print as a muted neutral — yes, I said neutral. I know that animal print can be extremely over done when thrown haphazardly in a room. But if you use just a touch here and there, it is an exquisite way to add a different pattern and texture to a room.

Today, peruse the images of zebra print below. Tomorrow, we continue to travel through the wild world of animals…

Whoa -- this is a little overboard for my tastes. But you've gotta applaud the creative courage.

This is definitely a neutral -- light blue zebra print.

More light-colored zebra print. Having the stools underneath this table is called "layering" because it adds another layer or level for your eyes to focus on in the room.

Zebra print is even welcome in outdoor spaces!
